Balance

Balance

There was a quote that got my attention a while back and it said, " A long time ago, people who sacrificed their sleep, family, food, and laughter were called saints.... Now they are students"
I can agree with this statement to an extent because now being a full time student and a part time worker can take its tolls. Of course, I decided to take the job that I did and pick out the schedule for school that I did. However, I really do not like how in a federally funded university we have to take general ed. To me personally, it is a waste of the first 2 years that could be used to focus on a major of our choice. I wish it could be a choice because for some people, they do not know what their major is and they have not decided so they need to take a lot of classes to see what their likes and dislikes are. However, some of us know what we want to do and we have to take an extra 2 years to study things that we do not need to study that is not gonna be beneficial to life. This is not to insult anybody, this is my opinion. To me, it's like high school all over again. The thing I was trying to escape.

Overall, now I am getting less sleep especially waking up on Thursdays because I am working all the way until 2 am from Tuesday to Thursday. I do not know how I am doing it but school can be stressful at times because when I get home, I want to take a power nap but cannot because I have to worry about homework from classes and readings. I do not know whose idea it was that college had to be a stage of homework overload because rather than benefiting students, it can actually be destructive. I guess our education system could change. I am open for that idea. This is college however, it is what it is and I think I cannot do anything about it. From what I heard, college is getting easier but it does not compare to what has happened in the past. My high school teachers told me that their professors were much more strict and old fashioned with chalkboards and would not take questions until the end of their lectures. However, I am just happy to be living as such a time like this. Times are changing.

  1. I agree that the 2 year general ed. is a waste of time! If we spend that time studying for the career/ major, then the students would be really prepared and ready for the workforce. I think they do that so students could spend more time in the university system and waste money on the increasing tuition and overpriced books.

  2. I can relate I feel that we shouldn't have to pay for these thousand dollar classes just for general ed. it was all covered in high school.
